I think it depends on a number of things. If you are a first-time home buyer who is considering it, you really don't have to hire one. There is no law that requires it either. The issue is, unless you know a decent amount about properties and mortgages, you are likely to set yourself up to have mistakes and these mistakes can be VERY costly.
