I think it depends on a number of things. If you are a first-time home buyer who is considering it, you really don't have to hire one. There is no law that requires it either. The issue is, unless you know a decent amount about properties and mortgages, you are likely to set yourself up to have mistakes and these mistakes can be VERY costly.
I agree with the statement above. It all comes down to context and personal experience. You can be new to the market and looking to buy your first home and while it isn't needed for this, you can end up paying more in the long run.
